Madam Lay Fay Yuen had used the reason of separation for 4 years to file for divorce against her husband, Dr Teng Cheng Sin. Dr Teng appealed. The High Court said that Madam Lay should not be allowed to divorce Dr Teng using separation as a reason given that she had walked out of him. Salma was imprisoned for approximately 5 years for drug trafficking in 2010. Her husband was also incarcerated. 2 relatives took care of Salma’s children who were aged between 20 months and 10 years old. I have been asked the question many times: is adultery an offence in Singapore? While the answer is no, adultery is certainly a serious offence under the Sharia law. Under the Islamic Sharia law, people of opposite sex who are not married to each other are not allowed to get “too close” to each other. If they do, they risk being punished by public caning. In fact, unmarried men and women are not even allowed to ride on the

Ou Xiaobai, a 32-year-old gay woman living in Beijing, entered into a sham marriage with a gay man to keep her family happy. Ou told BBC: “At that time I was living a happy life with my girlfriend in Beijing. But I was under constant pressure from my family – who lived in Dalian – to get married… My parents kept asking me if I was seeing anyone. Share this on WhatsApp Getting a divorce in a foreign country can present different challenges. For instance, a foreign spouse who is sponsored by his/ her spouse’s company as a dependant runs the risk of being asked to leave Singapore before the conclusion of the divorce proceedings. When a foreigner (X) comes to work in Singapore on an Employment Pass (EP), X’s employer usually sponsors his/ her spouse and children. They become “dependants” on X’s employment pass. X can request for the cancellation of the Dependant’s Pass (DP) anytime- before or during divorce proceedings- and the dependant would then have to leave Singapore.
