Mother-in-law Problems Singapore

On his daughter’s wedding, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan said in his speech that choosing the right spouse is the most crucial decision you will have to make, as “it can be a source of great happiness or the converse”. The Minister advised his sons that “the best predictor of their future partner is their potential mother-in-law”.

Over the years, I have come across many clients facing mother-in-law problems Singapore. Just today, I saw a client who has been married for 27 years with 2 children. She met her husband at the age of 17, when her husband was 19. According to my client (the lady), there wasn’t a third party in the marriage. The marriage had broken down irretrievably due to the difficult relationship she had with her mother-in-law. Since the start of the marriage, her mother-in-law had been picking on her and tried to get involve in every aspect of the marriage- finances, child-rearing and even housework. Her husband would side with his mother. Parties frequently quarrelled about the state of affairs.

Things deteriorated to the extent that the husband moved out of the matrimonial home to live with his mother. The marriage had irretrievably broken down.

Such cases are not uncommon.

Marriage, as they say, is not just about 2 people. It is about 2 families coming together and learning to accept (and live with) each other.
