What should you do if you are a victim of domestic violence in Singapore?
Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence in Singapore.
Take the case of Amanda (not her real name). Amanda and her husbands received tertiary education and hold high-ranking jobs in the government.
She thought that domestic violence in Singapore only happens to those who are poor and not as educated. She was wrong.
According to Amanda, her husband forced her into having sex twice daily. He also forced her to enter contracts on his behalf, which resulted in her being sued.
In 2014, Amanda’s husband threatened to kill her. It was the last straw. Amanda packed up and left.
In another case, Devi (not her real name) met her husband when she was in university. Even while they were dating, Devi’s husband was used to throwing tantrums at her. After their marriage, Devi’s husband tried to stop her from going out with her friends. Later, Devi found out that her husband was visiting a spa which provided sexual services. He even hit and choked her due to a Facebook post. Devi fainted and regained consciousness later. She escaped shortly thereafter.
